Has your list of FaceTime or Skype date ideas been drying up lately? Does it feel like you’re always doing or talking about the same things with your partner? You’re not alone!

For my partner and I, a pattern started to form in our video chats.

Don’t get me wrong we were still excited to see each other but something was lacking. I decided to change it up and create Skype date ideas that would push us to try new things. When I’d see her smile from ear to ear I knew I was onto a winner 🙂

Let’s be honest, why should people in conventional relationships have all the fun when it comes to date nights?!

If you’re wanting to try something different I’ve put together a foolproof date night that you can surprise your partner with.

The trick is to make it all about your partner. Everyone loves to be pampered and what I’ve put together will do exactly that, so let’s get stuck in.

FaceTime & Skype Date Ideas to Try in 2024

1. Lighthearted Fun

This is how you will set the tone for the night.

Starting your date night with some lighthearted fun is a great way to create a comfortable and relaxed mood. You want to use this time to put everything that’s on your mind to the side to completely focus on each other.

Playing games

Games are a great way to help us unwind. Pull out your smartphones if there’s a game you’ve both been enjoying or find out what other games your partner is playing and get involved!

If it’s not a multiplayer game you can try and find something else they’d like to play in the app store. Some options are:

  1. Words With Friends 2: iOS & Android (FREE)
  2. Draw Something Classic: iOS & Android (FREE)
  3. Exploding Kittens: iOS & Android (PAID)

Draw & create together

Regardless of how artsy or creative you are, drawing is another great option.

A Journal of the American Art Therapy Association study found that 45 minutes of art making, like drawing, can reduce cortisol levels in the body, which is the primary stress hormone.

If your partner is stressed, this could be exactly what they need to let go and relax.

You could use Draw Something Classic, mentioned above, or something like Aggie, which is free and easy to use across any device with a web browser.

Short on time?

Apps like SnapChat and Messenger are always creating new and hilarious filters.

They are a great way to have a quick giggle and will help take your mind off anything that’s bothering you.

2. Cook together

What happened the last time you had your favorite meal?

No doubt you had a mouth watering smile on your face! We may not have the luxury of eating ‘together’ but this is exactly how your partner should feel before they take their first bite.

For this to work it’s best to announce your date night intentions ahead of time so your partner can have all the right ingredients ready. If you want it to be a surprise you’ll need to involve someone you both know.

Need some inspiration? Check out the LDR couple (pictured above) that cooks together every week and see how it impacted their relationship!

If you’re wanting to keep it a surprise or don’t have access to a friend or family member, another awesome option is to order from a restuarant on an app like Uber Eats.

You can make it sound like you’re picking blindly for each other but if you’ve done your homework you’ll know what they love and can order it for them!

3. Watch Their Favorite Movie/Show

how to watch movies in sync

We all have guilty pleasures when it comes to movies and tv shows and your date night is the perfect time to indulge with your partner.

If you have a series you watch religiously then keep it for later. Use this time to pick a movie or show that your partner loves.

TIP: Try and do some digging ahead of time and check out what they’ve liked on Facebook. If all else fails, just ask!

Watch movies in sync

I remember the days of being on FaceTime or Skype and counting down from three so we could both press play at the same time. Thankfully this is a thing of the past!

Kast is a real-time video sharing app that allows you to share your screen and watch movies in sync.

What’s really cool is that you can watch whatever you want on any device as the platform is available on the web, desktop and mobile.

Now LDR couples can ‘Netflix & Chill’ 😉

4. Getting intimate

intimacy in a long distance relationship

Intimacy isn’t necessary for the perfect date night, it may be too early in the relationship or it might be something that you’re not comfortable doing and that’s totally ok!

No one should be forced to do something they don’t want to. It’s important to talk with your partner so you’re both on the same page.

But if you are or do want to have fun together, here are some options to spice things up:

  1. Play sexy truth or dare by Ice Breaker Ideas
  2. Have a game of strip poker using Poker Stars’ home game feature
  3. Use connected adult toys from Lovense for an immersive experience

5. Question time

Let’s face it, we all like to talk about ourselves! So why not use this as an opportunity to learn more about each other?

Throughout the night you’ll be constantly talking but here is your chance to connect on a deeper level. You’ve relaxed into the night and shared an amazing experience, which makes it the perfect time open up and talk about more personal topics. A couple of good options include:

  1. 100 questions to ask your partner while on a date night by LifeHack
  2. 200 questions for couples by Conversation Starters World

Some questions may relate to regular relationships but a lot of questions will transfer across to couples in long distance relationships.

Have questions of your own?

But Nate, what do I do when there’s a pause or we run out of things to say?

No problemo! Livius has you covered, he’s written some great articles specifically around conversations, check out his articles:

I’m shy when it comes to getting intimate, how can I make it a great experience?

Check out Livius’ article on long distance sex, he goes through some great points on creating a romantic experience for you and your partner.

Now it’s your turn!

This five part date night might look daunting at first but you’ll see how easily everything comes together when you’re having a great time!

Remember, even if it is a bit of work to set up, you’re doing this for your partner and to show them the lengths you’re willing to go to make them happy!
